Murray Meets Durandeau and the Collab Sparks Fly

I'm Murray. Nice people call me by my first name David!

This is a true story of how two creative musicians, from opposite sides of the of the globe became a songwriting team!

Well I shall definitely call you David then! Can you tell us a bit about yourself?
I've been in the creative business all my life, as creative director, musician, and author, but I didn'''t know jack about the songwriting business. If they're right in saying “Necessity is the mother of invention,” then it didn't take long for me to find Verse-Chorus.

Who have you found to collaborate with at Verse-Chorus?
Honestly, there are several that have blossomed over the years. I crossed paths with a singer-songwriter, named Marc Durandeau, from Barcelona (now living in Miami) back in April of 2022.

He had some pretty impressive credentials and had already released several albums. Marc was named Composer of the Year by Telemundo Television Network, so I was pretty jazzed about the thought of collaborating with him.

Wow, sounds like a great collaboration partnership was about to form!
You just never know, but I fell in love with Marc Durandeau's beautiful Catalan (Spanish) accent, and I guess Marc was happy with my lyrical writing.

I think the best thing that happened to us in the early get-to-know-you phase was that we both liked to talk and therefore we shared a lot about our music and our backgrounds right up front.

It's great you found someone you could connect with at that level. Did you also fit together creatively?
Definitely, our genres were a pretty good match, I knew Americana/Roots/Country lyrical writing and Marc knew all the music.

Our first song is called “Ghost Train”. We immediately knew we were good for each other by the time that one was done. We could feel it!
My favourite would be a song titled “Standing in the Mississippi Rain.” You can find the full song with vocals on my profile page or you can do a search using the exact title.

Amazing, well done to both of you! We are all keen to know what makes you and Marc such a great collaborative partnership?
We knew we'd make a great collaboration team, based upon mutual respect, moral principles, business ethics and musical vision – all we needed to do was write, compose, and meld.

Very valid points to highlight David, thank you. What does the future hold for this perfect partnership?
I am very pleased to say, twelve songs later, we are well on our way to producing an album, called “Back Roads,” by Marc Durandeau, oh, and an unknown lyricist from Seekonk, Massachusetts named David M. Murray!

Being a former creative director in marketing helped to position the album, both musically as well as the packaging of it.

Not 'unknown' for much longer David by the sounds of it! Congratulations on your success David and Marc! Do you have any tips for fellow members of Verse-Chorus?
I have two very valuable tips I'd like to share.

The First tip in finding the perfect collaborator is not just finding a person who works well with you on a musical side, but it's even better if you can connect on a personal level too!

The Second tip is if you're thinking about joining Verse-Chorus, get down to business by providing as much info in your post as possible. This is an opportunity to “sell” your creative ability, so don't hold back in the posts!

If you're already in the Verse-Chorus family, make sure you are giving the reader all the info they need. This is not the place to try to impress, it's the best place to find the best collaborators.

Good advice David, thank you! Finally, is there anything you would like to add?
I was fortunate to have had some recent successes in Australia, Russia and around the US, but don't let that fool you.

Although Marc and I are a great team today, we're still both indebted to Verse-Chorus to continue to put great song-writers and composers in our path and to help us to continue to spread our musical wings in the business.

To the new-commers, both Marc and I hope you invest in Verse-Chorus to find your perfect collaborating partner(s).

Try to imagine Marc and I becoming a songwriting team without Andy and Rebecca Jones, owners of Verse-Chorus!

On behalf of Verse-Chorus, Andy and I would like to sincerely thank the wonderful and much valued member David Murray, for agreeing to share his Verse-Chorus experiences with us.

Congratulations David and Marc on your new song "Ghost Train". We are so excited about your forthcoming album "Back Roads" and cannot wait to hear it! I am sure there wil be many more successful collaborations to come!

For me, David's story shows how finding that perfect collaborator sometimes requires more than just the bringing together of talented people. Finding a common connection also plays an important part.

Taking the time to get to know one another can really help build that long lasting partnership. You never know, it may even lead to more successes than you had originally thought!

I am so pleased to hear how Verse-Chorus played such a crucial part in bringing together these talented collaborators. As well as their first song, a friendship has blossomed and an album is in the making! Amazing!

We really do value the immense support we get from our members. It does feel like we are all part of a Verse-Chorus family. You are all amazing!
