DescriptionI'm an old man now, more politically inclined than most, and, for the most part, I've been writing 'protest' songs in recent times. However, I have plenty of songs, ancient and modern, that I think would grace the albums of the right artist or artists. Top 20 singles? Sure take a look... https://thedakotahills.blogspot.com/ By the way, don't let the old fogie thing fool you. Mick Jagger, Keith Richard and Paul McCartney are quite a bit older than me!

Dreams & AmbitionsI was a student actor between 1969 and 1973 and a professional actor from 1973 to 1980. I wrote a lot of songs during this period. I played the leading role in 'The Rocky Horror Show' at the Kings Road Theatre in Chelsea longer than anyone else. I had a verbal contract with Safari records at this time and, at their insistence, wrote a song after the style of the Rocky Horror Show which I produced, and they were happy with. Sadly, as I suspected and mentioned at the time, the BBC wouldn't give it any airplay. (The guys in charge at Safari assured me that this would not be a problem) Interestingly, a businessman friend of mine tells me that, back in the day, when he was a regular in a variety of South American nightclubs, the same song was being played pretty frequently over there. Even more interestingly, this same song ('Hey You!')was once voted the 'third worst' single of all time by the proprietors of a large database of single records! (Don't think it still exists - Forgotten the name of it) I wouldn't necessarily disagree with their assessment. Anyway, I've written my share of forgettable stuff. Never mind, a lot of my output has been pretty good, if I say so myself. Check it out: - https://thedakotahills.blogspot.com/

EquipmentPen, paper, guitar, vocals > Song Pen, paper, guitar, vocals, computer, sequencer > Song Pen, paper, guitar, vocals, studio, professional musicians > Song These days = A.I. raises lyrical, vocal and musical efforts to an acceptably professional standard less expensively. i.e. Pen, paper, guitar, vocals, (+ or - computer), SUNO = Song. Some of my "protest" songs, where time is of the essence. i.e. One wishes to get a song out as soon as possible after a particular event. (Charlie Kirk's assassination - 168 schoolgirls killed by USA/Israel) A.I. can take a larger role in the creation of a song. I write the lyrics, put it into SUNO with pretty exact instructions. If I'm lucky, something half-decent might emerge pretty quickly. Thus, one can get a needful commentary out very soon after a particular outrage occurs, using the rapidity of AI's creative gifts. For the most part, however, I use A.I. these days to sharpen up wholly developed songs.

Use of AIAs previously mentioned: as regards the creation of 'protest' songs, where time is of the essence. (Chord structure + vocal melody) Potential artists look more favourably, I'm sure, upon material that sounds professionally produced, as opposed to that fuzzy, old thing you recorded into a cassette recorder 50 years ago.

Music

Tomcat

Full demo song with music and vocals, Genres: Pop

This song was intended to be the B-side of a record I produced and recorded for Safari Records in 1979. The BBC, however, thought the A-side of the song too raunchy for its listeners (it was written, at Safari's owners request, after the style of the Rocky Horror Show, which I had starred in a few months before), and it was refused air-play. So, it never charted. Tomcat was recorded in a 24-track studio in Tooting and some great musicians, (Nick Straker band) and an equally great engineer, helped me produce Tomcat, and the A-side, 'Hey You'.

Who Needs You?

Full demo song with music and vocals, Genres: Jazz, Rock, AI was used to create this song

Though the song has been put through SUNO's A.I. machine to raise it from its original state (recorded quickly in an 8-track studio in the 1970s) to a professional standard, the vocal melody and chord structure are precisely the same as they were when I first wrote the song.

Merry Sheri

Wrote this song in 1990 and recorded it on a 4-track recorder and using a cheap sequencer, in my attic room in West Hampstead, a year later. The quality has faded somewhat. Apologies for this.

You Made Love To Me!

Although the song has been put through SUNO's A.I. machine to get it to an acceptably professional standard, the vocal melody (apart from the A.I. singer's vocal calisthenics) the chord structure, tempo and 'feel' mirror the song as it was first written and roughly recorded in 1996.

Does She Love Him?

Full demo song with music and vocals, Genres: Singer-Songwriter, AI was used to create this song

I wrote the first verse and chorus of this song in 2014, I think. But the rest would not come. Anyway, I recorded it simply so I wouldn't forget it at that time. Got drunk one night in June 2026, and went looking for the song. Found it in some out of the way place and, within and hour, had the rest of the song. I put the original verse and chorus into SUNO and sung the rest a capella. 'Does she Love Him' is the result.

40 Days in the Wilderness

Full demo song with music and vocals, Genres: Rock, Folk, Singer-Songwriter, AI was used to create this song

Back in 1969 a friend asked me to compose a melody for a poem he had written called 'Just Came Back from the Wilderness.' inspired by his lyrics, I wrote '40 Days', perhaps 10 to 12 years later. The lyrics are quite different from the originals. I was looking through a folder of creative stuff the other day and came across these amended lyrics. I recorded the vocals and guitar into Audacity, just as I'd performed the original version for Bob France and his girlfriend, Roweena, 57 years previously. This was then exported to SUNO, where it was neatened up considerably. 24 hours of editing later, '40 Days in the Wilderness' emerged.
