Did You Follow Me Here (My Reincarnated Dear)?

Genres: Folk, Singer-Songwriter

Lyrics and Music by J. Patrick Sharpe

Did you follow me here with a love of the eternal kind?
Did you follow me here with the rage of one left behind?
Did you follow me here like a stream that flows underground?
Did you know where you were going was your soul overflowing with a love that just wouldn't come down?

Now I love you dear but you shouldn't have scared me that way
You haunted my dreams when you appeared to me most every day
Did you choose your place well when you were born to your mother that day?
Well I thought I was dreaming when I heard your voice screaming from over two hundred miles away

Will we still play the game like we did in lifetimes before?
Will it still be the same when they don't let us back through the door?
Will we linger around like clouds on a rainy spring day?
Will we keep our love brewing will we know what we're doing or will we run out of good things to say?

So did you follow me here with a love of the eternal kind?
Did you follow me here with the rage of one left behind?
Did you follow me here like a stream that flows underground?
Did you know where you were going was your soul overflowing with a love that just wouldn't come down?

Harder Than I Thought It Would Be

Genres: Folk, Blues, Singer-Songwriter

Lyrics and Music by J. Patrick Sharpe

Lord have mercy this is harder than I thought it would be (repeat)
You’re dragging me down in and out of the rain
With a dustbowl blowing up inside my brain
Sakes alive, this is harder than I thought it would be
Moonshine shimmer ain’t as bright as it used to be (repeat)
The sun fell down up behind the hill
The heat is gone but it burns me still
Moonshine shimmer ain’t as bright as it used to be
(Br) I’ve been grinding my gears
You’ve been running smooth
I’ve been stuck in the sand
You’ve been finding your groove
I’ve been swallowing tears
You’ve been soaking up sun
I’ve been playing the game
The one you’ve already won
Love under cover ain’t as warm as it ought to be (repeat)
I’ve got an ice sheet spreading underneath my bed
With a snowstorm brewing up inside my head
Love under cover ain’t as warm as it ought to be
Lord have mercy this is harder than I thought it would be (repeat)
You’re dragging me down in and out of the rain
With a dustbowl blowing up inside my brain
Lord have mercy this is harder than I thought it would be
Sakes alive, this is harder than I thought it would be
Heaven help me, this is harder than I thought it would be
Lord have mercy, this is harder than I thought it would be.

It’s Lovely, It’s Brilliant, It’s Grand

Genres: Folk, Singer-Songwriter

© J. Patrick Sharpe
Lyrics and Music by J. Patrick Sharpe

To a life that’s long and beautiful
Especially parts unplanned
To rise and greet the sunlight
It’s lovely, It’s brilliant, It’s grand

To a love that crosses ages
Destined to withstand
The twisting, raging river
It’s lovely, It’s brilliant, It’s grand

(Ch1) They can shred my shattered voice They can still my beating heart
But my shining soul is yours

To a spirit free and kindred
A heart with no demand
A mind that’s ever open
It’s lovely, It’s brilliant, It’s grand

(Ch2) You have my love forever
So, please now take my hand
And my shining soul is yours

(Br) To romance without limits
The flame forever fanned
Lively laughter uplifting
It’s lovely, It’s brilliant, It’s grand

To a life that’s long and beautiful
Happy imprints in the sand
To retire and meet moonlight
It’s lovely, It’s brilliant, It’s grand
It’s lovely, It’s brilliant, It’s grand

Why Must You Stick To Your Guns?

Genres: Folk, Singer-Songwriter

© J. Patrick Sharpe
Lyrics and Music by J. Patrick Sharpe

Why must you stick to your guns? (x2)
I guess your life ain’t no fun, fun, fun
Why must you stick to your guns?

It’s not the parts, it’s the whole (x2)
I feel it down in my soul, soul, soul
It’s not the parts, it’s the whole

Why should I stay in my lane? (x2)
Please stop assaulting my brain, brain, brain
Why should I stay in my lane?

Why must we choose a side? (x2)
It’s not the destination, it’s the ride, ride, ride
Why must we choose a side?

(Br) Once again you’ve crossed the line
How can you be so blind?
Without your blood and steel we’d be fine, fine, fine
You can stick it where the sun don’t shine (repeat)

I won’t be walking on your lawn (x2)
Just give me time and I’ll be gone, gone, gone
I won’t be walking on your lawn

Why won’t you bury the past? (x2)
This isolation therapy won’t last, last, last
Why won’t you bury the past?

Why must you stick to your guns? (x2)
I guess your life ain’t no fun, fun, fun
Why must you stick to your guns?
Why must you stick to your guns?

Used To Be Cool In High School Blues

Genres: Folk, Blues, Singer-Songwriter

© J. Patrick Sharpe
Lyrics and Music by J. Patrick Sharpe

There was a girl named Glory that I knew back in high school
She had a sun-tanned body and an in-ground swimming pool
She liked to wear a big purple hat
And she always made me laugh
She spent all her time drinking wine and shooting pool

I saw her last week she was walking with some guy
She had mud on her pants and black circles around her eyes
She was living on the bad side of town
Doing nothing but feeling down
She looked so sad that I had to ask her why She said…

I got the used to be cool in high school blues
I had everybody wishing they were standing in my shoes
All the rejects used to adore me
Now everyone seems to ignore me
I got the used to be cool in high school blues

I knew a guy named Meathead he was everybody’s football star
He had any girl he wanted in the back seat of his car
Now he’s working at the local hamburger shop
Serving up French fries and pushing a mop
He said, “You know I never thought that life could be this hard”

I saw the queen of our prom yesterday coming out of the Taco Hut
It’s an understatement to say that she’s in a rut
She must be smoking about 3 packs a day
She’s got 17 kids and another on the way
But she’s got a nice tattoo of a flower on the side of her beer gut

Blessing In Disguise

Genres: Folk, Singer-Songwriter

© J. Patrick Sharpe
Lyrics and Music by J. Patrick Sharpe

There’s dust in the hallway
A small empty room
Some things, you know, you can’t fix with a broom
But inspiration is coming soon

Here’s a shot to the weary
And a word to the wise
She is... a blessing in disguise

Where did the time go?
Your plans are all wrecked
Well, what in the world did you expect?
If I may please interject

Exaggerations abound
But there is no demise
She is... a blessing in disguise

(Br) A rose is in bloom
And it’s full of surprise
You woke up today and realized
Life is all compromise

A comet is coming
And it lights up the night
You’ve never seen such a beautiful sight
And something inside you seems to ignite
The place in your heart
Where the love occupies
She is... a blessing in disguise
She is... a blessing in disguise

I’ve Learned A Thing Or Two

Genres: Folk, Singer-Songwriter

© J. Patrick Sharpe
Lyrics and Music by J. Patrick Sharpe

I’ve got someone to blame for every one of my gray hairs
Oh yes, you know who you are
And I know that sometimes I didn’t do enough
And other times I took it too far

Back when I was young all my ducks were in a row
But now my ducks are scattered to the wind
When I look into the mirror I have to shake my head
And laugh about the shape I’m in

(CH) But I’ve learned a thing or two
I’ll share with you now
If I could be so bold
Youth is wasted on the young
And, man, it sucks to be old

I never understood why they say we’re “growing old”
When it seems that all we really do is shrink
When time and gravity become your enemies
It really makes you stop and… want to drink (and also think…but mostly drink) (CH)

(BR) Don’t misunderstand me
I still love to laugh
But it hurts me in a lot of weird places
And I love my friends and family
But I’m getting hard of hearing
And I struggle putting names to all their faces… aw good gracious

Have you noticed over the years when you go to see the doctor
They tell you everything that’s gone wrong
Now I don’t even wonder what might be going right
My laundry list of ills is getting long (CH)
